Bethany Hamilton lost her left arm to a tiger shark at thirteen. By fourteen, she was back competing. By twenty-five, she was attempting to qualify for the biggest waves of her life while raising a young son, while running her own foundation, while pregnant.

We followed her, on and off, for six years. The film documents one of the most resilient athletes of her generation at a moment when consequence kept compounding. Surfing comeback. Motherhood. Big-wave attempts. The Pipeline barrels nobody believed she could ride.

What started as a six-week short for a brand became a six-year feature documentary, distributed theatrically, now streaming worldwide.

Multi-year embedded shoots. Five day-bookings a year, plus three big trips. Cheap when amortized, expensive on any single line item.

Water cinematography that asked the camera operator to swim into waves Bethany was riding at speed, with one arm. Half the prep was rig design. The other half was earning her belief that we wouldn't get her hurt. When the camera-water relationship is right, the surfer forgets you are there.

Family trust built across multiple Christmases, a rehab visit, a body that did not always cooperate. None of that footage is in the film. All of it is why the film could be made.

We started thinking we were making a comeback film. By month twelve we had a film about motherhood. By month twenty we had a film about consequence. The discipline was holding all three open until the footage told us which one was true.

Theatrical release in summer 2019. Limited US run, expanded as audiences turned up.

Now streaming on Netflix, Prime Video, and Apple TV. Available in most major markets worldwide. Continues to find new audiences seven years after original release.
